It was an ugly day, in contrast to the beautiful summer weather they had been having over the last week. The rain persisted down, and just when she thought it had stopped for long enough to put the washing out, it started to bucket down again.
The sky was grey, the sort of grey that makes everything stand out more. The grey that makes things looks like they are cutouts from various magazines and pasted haphazardly onto velvety grey paper.
The grey made her feel sombre and humble.
She wandered around the house, as she usually did that time of morning. Peeking into doorways to see what each occupant was doing. Sipping her coffee as she did so. The little one was sitting in her parent's bed, watching her videotape. Others were listening to music, and playing with blocks.
But the little one just sat there.
Staring at the screen.
She fixed the tape up, pressed play. Left the room. Dialled up her computer. Began ploughing through her messages online. Her parents in the back
